4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
Copyright Google Slideshow - For Copyright, Fair Use, and Ethics I made this presentation for Nebraska City High School as to inform my students about how a copyright works, how to tell if a work is copyrighted or not, and about the penalties of breaking copyright laws.
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
A. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
B. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
C. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
D. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools

One of my classes that I took was TE 868 Copyright, Fair Use, and Ethics. In this class we studied in depth these three topics, especially in regards to education. I never really knew how copyright worked and this class was very educational. I try to pass on some of this knowledge to my students. When we are creating posters or other digital media I try to provide them with websites that have copyright free images so that they do not have to worry about breaking copyright laws. Even though they are using images for educational purposes they still need to be careful as to not break the copyright rules.
In TE 868 we were required to create a presentation summarizing Copyright Law and what we learned in the class.I have shown this presentation to my class before and I continually try to reinforce the fact that they need to cite any works that they use. When we do our one research paper on comparing and contrasting Day of the Dead and Halloween I make sure that they cite their sources in APA Format. This is a skill that they will need not only in high school but in college. I also want them to understand why it is important to cite works; not only to safeguard oneself against infringing on a copyright but to honor the creator of the original work.
As I move forward in my technology integration I may decide to incorporate digital media such as Twitter and it will be even more important to make sure that my students understand digital citizenship and their responsibilities when posting information online.
